Valerie Bertinelli confirms she’s dating again.
“I’ve met someone. And I’m incredibly grateful for him,” the actress and cooking star told USA TODAY Tuesday while discussing her new cookbook, “Indulge” (out April 2). “It’s unlike any relationship that I’ve ever experienced with a man. I don’t want to say too much, but I feel incredibly blessed and lucky to have met him, because I wasn’t expecting it!
“He was not on my radar. I was going to die with my six cats and my dog and be incredibly happy doing it. So this came out of left field, and I’m grateful it did. He’s very special.”

Bertinelli, 63, divorced Tom Vitale, her husband of nearly 11 years, in 2022. On Monday, she shared an old video to her Instagram Stories captioned, “When someone asks if I’ll start dating again soon,” in which she adamantly shakes her head and mouths “Yeah, (expletive) no.” In the repost, she added, “This didn’t age well.”
She can’t believe she went public with the relationship, either. “What was I doing? … I just can’t help it. When I’m flipping happy, it’s all over me, and he’s one of the main reasons.
“I really want women and men to take away that it’s the work that you do (on yourself) that can lead you to meeting someone like I’ve been lucky enough to meet right now. This would not have happened three years ago, four years ago, last year ― it wouldn’t have. And I feel incredibly lucky to have met him and made a connection with him.”
Bertinelli stepped out Sunday at the 2024 Oscars, accompanying Wolfgang Van Halen (her son with Eddie Van Halen) and his wife Andraia Allsop on the red carpet. Van Halen was in attendance to team with Ryan Gosling and Slash on an epic performance of best original song nominee “I’m Just Ken” from “Barbie.”
The “One Day at a Time” star wore a vintage cream pantsuit by designer Richard Tyler, pulled from her closet. “I wore it at a big CBS anniversary celebration in 2003. It’s just been sitting in its dry-cleaner bag for 21 years.”
She raved about Wolfgang Puck’s menu at the Governors Ball after-party. “It was really good! They had mac and cheese that was absolutely delicious, these gold spray-painted chocolate Oscars. They had these really great little sweet and savory tiny tacos with a sweet pickled onion. Absolutely delicious.”
But she says she declined the champagne that was flowing at the awards show. She feels “emotionally healthier” when she skips alcohol, “because it’s a depressant.” She hasn’t had a drink since Jan. 1. “That just happened kind of accidentally, because I was doing dry January, then February came along, and now it’s March and I still haven’t drank, so it’s like, oh, I guess I’m not drinking now. But I’m not setting myself up for failure. I’m not saying I’m never going to drink again because I might, I don’t know.
“I didn’t want to feel the way I’m going to feel after I’ve had a glass of champagne. It was a super-long day, and if I add alcohol into that, I was going to wake up a little depressed.
“I’m already sky-high, high as a kite, full of joy, I don’t need the addition of alcohol that I used to think would make me happy or release anxiety. I was already feeling amazing. Why do I need alcohol?”
